Dojo Etiquette |
|
Dojo etiquette can be simply defined as “dojo manners,” or how one is expected to behave in the dojo. Dojo etiquette applies to all GKD practitioners, students and instructors alike. It’s important to have fun and enjoy your time learning karate, but staying focused and disciplined is also important.
Here are some of the responsibilities of our new students:
· All students are expected to arrive at the dojo 15 minutes before class to get dressed and to help prepare the dojo for class.
· On entering, the dojo salutation rituals must be performed: ENTERING THE DOJO — A formal standing bow, towards showmen, clap your hands twice, call out your first name announcing your presence in Japanese — “(Your Name) Kimashita Onegai-Shimasu.”
· Lower ranked students are expected to take care of the dojo. It’s their job to sweep and do any necessary cleaning before every class, as well as the cleaning and repairing of all Karatedo equipment. Senior students are not picking on lower ranks — we’ve all had to do it, and it’s important to take pride in the dojo.
· Junior ranking belts are expected to assist senior belts without having to be urged or pushed to do so.
· Exiting the Dojo: Clap your hands twice, call out your first name, announcing you’re leaving in Japanese — “(Your Name) Karemasu Arigato Gozaimashita” followed by a formal standing bow towards shomen.
